Laura Nakamura was elected to the City Council in November 2022.
Laura Nakamura was elected to the City Council from Concord's District 5 in November of 2022. During her City Council tenure, she has also served in the following capacities:
- Appointed to the John Muir Community Health Fund Board for a term ending December 31, 2026
- Appointed to the Marin Clean Energy Board for 2024
- Appointed to the Housing and Economic Development and Recreation, Cultural Affairs, and Community Development Standing Committees for 2024
- Chair, Homeless Strategic Plan Working Group, 2023
She also regularly attends regional bodies as an alternate or participant, including
- Association of Bay Area Governments General Assembly
- Central Contra Costa Transit Authority (The County Connection)
- Transportation Partnership and Cooperation Regional Committee (TRANSPAC)
- Contra Costa Mayors Conference
Nakamura was a recipient of Save Mount Diablo’s Mountain Star Award in 2024. This award recognizes individuals and organizations whose contributions have been significant in helping Save Mount Diablo achieve its mission “to forever preserve the remaining natural lands on and around Mount Diablo, and to connect Mount Diablo to the rest of the Diablo Range.”
She is also a member of Urban Habitat’s 2021 leadership cohort focusing on equitable policy work in land use, transportation, and housing. In 2021, she was appointed to Concord’s Community Services Commission.
Dedicated Neighborhood Organizer
A dedicated neighborhood organizer and advocate for positive change, Laura has been a resident of Concord since 1988. With deep roots in the community, she has witnessed the city's growth and transformation firsthand. As a proud parent, Laura raised her two children in Concord, and both are graduates of Clayton Valley High School.
She has been active in the community coaching soccer, advocating for bike lanes, leading a ministry at St. Bonaventure, volunteering, and doing outreach to the unsheltered. Laura joined Bike Concord’s advocacy team in 2016, and she is a co-founder of Concord Communities Alliance (CCA), an organization working toward just and equitable conditions for all residents.
In addition to her civic engagement, Laura serves as a healthcare worker, specifically as a pediatric cardiac sonographer for Children's Hospital Oakland. Based in Walnut Creek, her work in healthcare has provided her with a unique perspective on the challenges faced by individuals and families in the community.
Through her professional experience, Laura has developed a profound understanding of the importance of accessible and high-quality healthcare services, transportation, and secure housing for all residents.

Laura's extensive community involvement, combined with her dedication to sustainability and social justice, propelled her to seek public office. In November 2022, she was elected to the Concord City Council, where she continues to advocate for a sustainable future, public safety, affordable housing, and responsible development.
